The Scottish Government is committed to realising the full potential of social enterprise; a way of doing business that is great for the economy and great for the people of Scotland.
Over the last decade the Scottish Government has put in place a world-leading ‘eco-system of support’ for social enterprise, with increasing levels of international interest. This system includes specialist business support, spaces for innovation and collaboration, incubators and accelerators, education and leadership programmes and affordable sources of social finance.
In 2016, the Cabinet Secretary for Communities, Social Justice and Equalities launched ‘Scotland’s Social Enterprise Strategy’, a fully co-produced, ten-year strategy to further strengthen this innovative movement for change.
In 2017, we worked with the sector to identify 92 specific actions to realise these shared ambitions, including doubling the amount of seed capital available to social entrepreneurs and increasing investment in the ‘Social Enterprise in Education’ programme.

Kibble Education and Care Centre
Kibble is one of Scotland’s oldest charities and a leading provider of child and youth care services. Many of the young people who come to Kibble have experienced trauma in their lives. Through its integrated range of services Kibble helps young people (aged five +) with complex social, emotional, behavioural and educational needs to move forward and lead sustained, healthy and fulfilled lives. It provides residential care, secure care, primary and secondary education, intensive fostering services, young workforce development, outreach services and preventative and rehabilitative services.
Kibble also operates a number of social enterprises, including its newest and largest venture The Experience. Based in Hillington Park, The Experience houses Scotland’s only indoor electric go-karting arena, laser tag, Refuel Café, and conference centre. On the surface, The Experience looks like a fun day out – and it is – but for like-minded organisations driven by values, it’s so much more. It offers a unique setting for conferences and events, team building and development days, gala dinners, product launches, and a whole lot more. Operating as a young workforce development centre, young people also have the chance to gain valuable experience in a real working environment while gaining qualifications.
Look out for ‘good’, a unique project coming soon to Buchanan Galleries. Managed by Kibble, the project will connect communities and bring public and third sector organisations together to share and learn through information, events and activities.

Grassmarket Tartans is part of the Grassmarket Community Project, a place where vulnerable people come to be part of a community, develop new skills, grow in confidence and enjoy genuine friendships. Members (who include people with mental health issues, disabilities, people with experience of homelessness, roughsleeping and substance misuse) are valued for the contribution they make to the life of the project.
In 2011, a talented member of our weaving group took inspiration from the famous local story of Greyfriars Bobby and designed Greyfriars Tartan. In 2014 we started a tartan textiles group where our in-house tailor equips members with the skills required to design and create a range of beautiful handmade products. While making the products, members are undergoing a comprehensive textiles training programme and working towards becoming more employable, as well as gaining valuable life skills such as improved communication and team work.
