Case Study

YES to young people’s futures

Posted in: .

Young Enterprise Scotland (YES) is a registered charity, which has been working to support young people in Scotland for 40 years. YES run a variety of enterprise programmes for young people aged 5 to 30 in primary and secondary schools, Further Education colleges, prisons, secure & residential units and community groups. Their team of passionate staff and committed volunteers work hard to support young people to reach their full potential in four main areas: YES Learning, Company Programme, YES Academy and Bridge 2 Business.

James Ward, Operations Manager at the YES Academy recounted how CEIS support has recently helped YES secure Big Lottery Funding.

We were going through a period of transition as an organisation and had identified the need to introduce social enterprise activities to the business to generate alternative sources of income.  A feasibility study was undertaken through an ‘Awards for All’ grant from BIG Lottery with the next stage involving putting together a strong business plan & case to the Young Enterprise Scotland Board of Directors.

CEIS on hand to help

This is where we were fortunate to secure the support of CEIS to help us develop the framework for the business and look at financial forecasts. Roy Crosby, our appointed business adviser had a very professional approach and used his experience to steer us through some difficult decisions. With his help we put together a strong business plan, which addressed every area of the Social Enterprise framework.

CEIS brought a different way of thinking to the table and was extremely supportive in developing our ideas and ensuring that we considered the financial and business implications of what we were looking to achieve.  The involvement of CEIS also brought reassurance to our Board of Directors and external funders that we had engaged with an organisation with a wealth of experience in this field.  I have no doubt that this contributed to our Board approving the project and ultimately influenced funders decisions to support us. We soon received the great news our application for Big Lottery Funding had been approved.

“The service and support provided [by CEIS] was invaluable and without it we would not have had the opportunity to prepare and succeed in the way we have to date”.

Valuable partnership for the future!

The CEIS support and the engagement with Roy Crosby has influenced the way that YES as an organisation evaluate and plan new business ventures since CEIS initial involvement.  We have had subsequent support from CEIS on our YES Learning project which has now secured Government Funding. Our relationship with CEIS has proven to be a valuable partnership which we will look to continue developing in the future. I would definitely recommend CEIS services to anyone and already have on a number of occasions.

“The support provided by CEIS has been vital to contributing to the financial sustainability of Young Enterprise Scotland as an organisation and delivering confidence to our partners and funders that we are a strong and viable organisation with a bright future.  Roy Crosby provided a personable style of support and a wealth of experience to the engagement which we were very fortunate to receive and I think this was a driving force behind the results and outcomes from our engagement with CEIS”.
